Ballet is often seen as the pinnacle of grace, discipline, and dedication. But behind the curtains of some elite institutions, a darker reality persists — one of abuse, coercion, and lasting trauma. The recent lawsuit filed against the Richmond Ballet by a former student is the latest in a series of alarming revelations exposing a systemic culture of physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse in elite ballet schools across the country.

As a former ballerina and a lifelong advocate for survivors, this case strikes close to home for me. I know firsthand the power dynamics that exist in dance, where authority is rarely questioned and where young performers are taught to suffer in silence for the sake of perfection. That silence must end.

What We Know About the Richmond Ballet Lawsuit

According to court documents and reports, the plaintiff alleges she was subjected to years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse beginning at age 8 while training at Richmond Ballet. The 85-page complaint describes disturbing practices, including public weigh-ins, “fat letters,” physical assaults, and normalization of eating disorders. One of the most disturbing claims is that staff ignored or enabled this conduct, perpetuating an environment where harm was routine and accountability absent.

This is the third lawsuit against Richmond Ballet since 2022, forming a troubling pattern that cannot be ignored.

A Culture That Demands Silence

Ballet training is built on hierarchy and discipline. Students are expected to endure pain quietly, submit to authority, and internalize perfectionism at any cost. These dynamics, coupled with early age entry, gender-based power disparities, and deep emotional investment in a dancer’s career, create conditions where abuse can flourish unchecked.

As a survivor advocate, I’ve seen how these systems not only fail to protect children. They actively endanger them, cloaking trauma in tradition and silence.
