Wal-Mart has agreed to pay $17.5 million to settle a racial discrimination lawsuit claiming the company discriminated against African-Americans in recruiting and hiring truck drivers. The lawsuit, filed in 2004 alleging that Wal-Mart rejected or deterred individuals from applying based on race, was given class-action status in May 2007. While Wal-Mart attempted to dismiss the case, the court denied their motion.

Based on the allegations of racial discrimination, Wal-Mart plans to implement improvements in the transportation division’s recruitment, selection and personnel systems and agreed to provide priority placement for 23 black applicants who had provided claim forms.
