During a recent visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, I had the privilege of engaging with Rachel Luschen, the Executive Director of Unbound Now Indonesia. Our conversation highlighted the remarkable efforts of Unbound Now Indonesia in the fight against human trafficking and their unwavering commitment to creating lasting change.
Unbound Now Indonesia: Leading the Charge
Since its inception in 2019, Unbound Now Indonesia has been at the forefront of the battle against human trafficking. With offices in Jakarta and Lampung, their mission is to liberate the 1.8 million Indonesians who are trapped in this abhorrent crime. Their approach is both strategic and localized, focusing on addressing the unique challenges faced in Indonesia and making significant strides in rescuing victims and preventing future exploitation.
Unbound Now Indonesia’s work is comprehensive. They are actively involved in training law enforcement, medical professionals, families, and students across the country. By tailoring their programs to the specific needs of Indonesia, they provide crucial education on identifying trafficking, understanding the dangers of online exploitation, and promoting community resilience. Their proactive approach ensures that their efforts are not only impactful but also sustainable.
The Reality of Trafficking in Indonesia
The scope of human trafficking in Indonesia is deeply concerning. Traffickers exploit both domestic and international victims, with every one of Indonesia’s 38 provinces being involved in trafficking networks. The methods used by traffickers—such as withholding identity documents, coercing through debt, and using threats of violence—reflect the severe control and manipulation inflicted upon victims.
In particular, the commercial sex industry in Indonesia is fraught with exploitation, with up to 30 percent of individuals in this sector being victims of sex trafficking. Traffickers lure women and girls with false promises of employment or use debt to coerce them into sexual exploitation, particularly in areas like Batam and Jakarta.

Their focus on empowering local communities and building a network of leadership to sustain their efforts is a testament to their commitment to creating a future free from human trafficking.
