A federal lawsuit, Burch v. School Board of Citrus County, Florida was filed recently by the Florida Civil Rights Association against a Florida School District, which allegedly accused two black women of cheating on an adult skills test in 2010. According to the lawsuit, Lelia Jackson-Burch and Aretha Thomas were told by three Withlacoochee Technical Institute administrators that “you people don’t score that high,” and were then told to re-take the two-hour test. The deputies were called, and upon arrival, they checked Jackson-Burch’s phone, which revealed no evidence of cheating. The lawsuit states that Jackson-Burch believes the incident was racially motivated and alleges violations of civil rights, defamation and false imprisonment.
