Contra Costa County is one of nine counties in the San Francisco-Oakland Bay area. It is located in the northern portion of the East Bay . As of 2011, it had over one million residents, making it the ninth most populous county in California. Contra Costa County was one of the original 27 counties in California, and was created in 1850 when California became a state.
