In Marysville this weekend, a freak accident at a racetrack caused two deaths when a 17 year old driver drove into the pit area. The young driver told his father that the accident occurred when the steering wheel came off the steering column just as he was headed into a turn, which caused him to miss the turn and drive into the pit area, killing two spectators.
Although race cars are designed and built differently than standard automobiles, there have been numerous fatalities in recent years because of poorly designed and/or manufactured automobiles. Since 2000, there have been 34 people allegedly killed by a problem with stuck accelerators in Toyota vehicles. In the 1990s there were numerous people killed by problems with SUVs and roll-overs.
If you or a loved one is in an accident because of an automobile defect, you may be able to obtain a financial award from the automobile manufacturer. Manufacturers have a duty to put safe vehicles on the roads, and if a vehicle malfunctions and causes an accident, the accident victim may be able to sue the manufacturer.
Usually, when such an accident occurs, the victim will either join a class action lawsuit or sue the company on his or her own. A class action lawsuit is a group of people who have been hurt in a similar way by the same company suing the company together. The company is liable for the victim’s medical expenses, damage to the vehicle, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other expenses.
