Bicycling is a great way to stay in shape while getting around town at the same time. However, bicycling can be dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, somewhere between 600 and 800 bicyclists were killed every year in traffic accidents between 1998 and 2008. Although this number represents only a tiny proportion of the bicyclists on the roads, every death is tragic and there are steps you can take to prevent dangerous accidents while bicycling in the Bay Area.

First, and most importantly, wear a helmet. Many of the deaths that occur in bicycle accidents occur because of head injuries. Make sure the helmet is new and is properly fitted to your head. Wear the helmet all the time, even on very short trips. You should also make sure your bicycle equipment works properly. Test your brakes and properly inflate your tires. You should also make sure that your bicycle is the right size to fit your body.

It’s also important to make sure you are visible to other drivers. Wear bright colors or neon when riding, even during the day. If you are biking at night, put lights on your bike or reflective tape. Use hand signals when turning. You should also stay alert to the actions of other drivers and be ready to stop if you need to.

Finally, and this may be common sense, but don’t ride if you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription drugs. Many of the accidents that occur between a bicycle and a car involve alcohol use by either the driver or the bicyclist.
