NEWS FROM THE LEGAL COMMUNITY:
ATHENS, Ohio – The husband of an 82-year-old Athens woman who died last June has sued a local restaurant, claiming her death was brought on by a salmonella infection from a meal there.
The lawsuit against Casa Lopez by Milton Ploghoft, husband of Zella Ploghoft, is the third filed in Athens County Common Pleas Court against the restaurant following a May 2010 salmonella outbreak.
The Athens City/County Health Department traced the infection, which affected 56 people, to Casa Lopez.
The lawsuit claims that Mrs. Ploghoft ate at Casa Lopez on April 30, 2010, with her son and husband and that she and her son became ill the next morning. Her son improved, but Mrs. Ploghoft wound up in an Athens hospital, where she tested positive for salmonella.
She was later admitted to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus and then to a nursing center in Athens, where she suffered a stroke on May 17. She died on June 22.
