A Los Angeles jury has awarded $7.3 million in a negligence lawsuit against Cedars-Sinai Medical Center over the hospital’s alleged failure to quickly diagnose and treat a baby with meningitis. The Superior Court panel returned the unanimous verdict Friday in favor of the plaintiff Paris Campen, now 5, who suffered brain damage as a result of the illness.

The lawsuit was filed in 2005 and alleged that doctors in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit were negligent.

Plaintiff’s attorney Diane Corwin says the award will be placed in a trust for Campen’s past and future medical care. Corwin represented Campen along with co-counsel John F. Denove.

Cedars-Sinai spokeswoman Simi Singer says she did not have enough information on the verdict to comment.
