A former basketball player at the University of San Diego has filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming the university and its campus security staff engaged in racial discrimination and racial profiling. In his lawsuit, Trumaine Johnson claims that he and many other African-America athletes have been stopped while walking or driving and subjected to unnecessary searches by campus police. Johnson also points to an incident in February 2009 when he was tackled and pepper sprayed by a campus police officer. The officer accused Johnson of assaulting him, but witnesses on the scene disputed the officer’s claim, the lawsuit states.
