The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Brownsville Area School District last week, on behalf of a 13-year-old girl who refused to stand for the pledge of Allegiance and was given lunch detentions and in-school suspensions by her teacher. According to the complaint, the teacher “admonished” the student for disrespecting the soldiers dying overseas, though the girl’s mother said the reason for her daughter’s incompliance is that “she is just concerned with the state of the country today.” Though the girl’s mother was initially unable to convince school officials to end the discipline, the ACLU lawsuit has encouraged the district to stop disciplining and protect the student’s “constitutionally protect right” not to stand.
