Bayer has been served with four federal lawsuits involving the safety of two of its popular birth control pills, Yaz and Yasmin. First they received a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and now have been sued. The lawsuits followed an agreement  Bayer reached with the Food and Drug Administration in 2008 to run a corrective ad campaign for overstating the benefits of Yaz and downplaying its risks. Allegedly, Yaz has additional risks compared to other birth control pills because it contains the progestin drospirenone, which can increase potassium levels. The lawsuits allege that Bayer failed to warn women and their doctors of the  increased risk of injury — most notably blood clots — while over-promoting the benefits of the drugs.
